Ebola and "Africa"

19/11/2014

Over the past few months there has been worldwide panic over Ebola. The first outbreak of this virus was in 1976, so it is not new. While it is devastating in its effect the current Ebola outbreak is confined to basically three countries. (see the map below which illustrates that most of the safari destinations are further away from the outbreaks, than European cities !) What has been interesting is that globally many people think "africa" is just one country and ebola transmission is rampant across it. The press haven't helped in this regard.

Tourism to East & Southern Africa has slumped for no good reason. AIDS and malaria are the biggest killers in Africa and are far more easily contracted, but preventable.

We advise that you should not be concerned about Ebola if you are considering a safari in Africa. We keep our clients informed on medical matters relating to their tours, so we would not send you to a risky area.

Please, still consider all of the countries of Africa who rely upon tourism for their people's livelihoods ..... they are safe and welcoming.
